Canada Income Inequality: Toronto’s Cabbagetown A Prime Example Of Shrinking Middle Class

This feature was produced by Daniela Costa, a student in Ryerson University’s School of Journalism, in partnership with The Huffington Post Canada. In 2003, $350,000 bought Toronto resident Steven de Blois and his wife a house in the city’s colourful Cabbagetown neighbourhood. Eight years and two children later, the couple was looking to buy again. They settled on purchasing another home in the same neighbourhood — this time for just under $1 million. “We didn’t really see ourselves moving out. I saw myself in that [first] house forever,” 36-year-old de Blois says. “But there was an opportunity and we jumped …

Review: The Pear Tree in Cabbagetown

Every once in a while I am afforded a free evening, and when this happens I am always eager to sample an amazing Toronto restaurant.  My recent eating adventures led me to The Pear Tree Restaurant in Cabbagetown and a lovely meal with a couple vegetarian friends. The Pear Tree is one of those hidden gems that is a hot spot for locals, generating a loyal following of diners, yet remaining fairly unheard of outside the neighbourhood. Hidden in a quiet stretch of Parliament Street, The Pear Tree is easily passed by, but definitely worth a visit. A Taste of the World The Pear Tree offers …

Cabbagetown Gem: Winchester Kitchen and Bar

Today’s hidden gem comes in the form of Winchester Kitchen and Bar, a second-floor hideaway in historic Cabbagetown. The Friends of Riverdale Farm could have until July to come up with a plan to make the farm more financially sustainable before council contemplates slapping a $2 user fee on the petting zoo overlooking the Don Valley. Today budget committee member Michelle Berardinetti tabled a motion that would put off plans to charge the fee until after the community organization had time to finish the job it started earlier this year. Berardinetti tabled the amendment to a motion by budget chief Mike Del Grande, who suggested the city might raise some cash by charging a fee to get into …
