Then and Now: Winchester and Metcalfe

Then: January 10, 1935. Rear southeast corner of Winchester and “Medcalfe.” Actually it’s Metcalfe with a ‘t” not a “d” as it is in the official description in the photo. Now: June 2011. No changes here.  An older elegant, unmolested walk-up apartment on an equally elegant corner in Cabbagetown. The church in both pictures is St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church, built in 1890, now home of The Toronto Dance Theatre. Source: Then and Now: Winchester and Metcalfe | Urban Toronto.

New development coming to Bleeker and Carlton?

I’ve heard from the some of the local dog owners and perish members that the church now at the corner of Bleecker and Carlton is soliciting offers and there are two offers currently in the running to get the property under contract.  The numbers thrown around for the sale price are impressive to say the least.  The main trouble they been having is with the Second Mile Club who are opposing the offer of buy because of excessive noise that will be coming from construction if the proposal goes through. The parcel of land is consist of three lots with one …

DVCRA’s New Home Improvement Committee

Another great initiative from the boys and girls behind the Don Vale Cabbagetown Resident’s Association to help local home owners get great service by referring them to friends that have helped them before.  It’s these kind of initiatives that help us all collectively.  I was providing a similar service to my clients and will be helping them populate some of the blank spots.  Following is the message that was sent to me today. We are pleased to introduce the DVCRA’s new Home Improvement Committee. We hope you will take a moment to read this email. It addresses: 1) the mandate …

Why is Cabbagetown appreciating in value?

Seems that any property that gets listed in Cabbagetown sells and sells quickly.  This begs the question, why is it that properties sell quickly in Cabbagetown?  Following are a couple of items that I’ve noticed in my practice in Cabbagetown and its great impact on real estate values. Properties with multiple units are selling faster than single family and with multiple offers. (Read greater interest) We have a great pool of investors that are also working in the neighborhood that keep buying the old slum lord properties and renovating them into great homes for our future neighbors. There have been …

A Filipino Delicacy in St. James Town

I consider myself a very picky eater.  For one, I don’t eat pork nor do I go out of my way to try anything that doesn’t look good or makes my stomach turn.  Having said that, I really enjoy seeing what different culture consider the norm.  Take the Balut, a Filipino delicacy, for example, is something that I could never consume and is a very popular item that is sold on the streets by food stalls. I’ve not been in the resturant in question but will put my big boy pants on to try out.  Any takers that want to …
