What’s New Cabbagetown: Events and Sales for June 2013

This weekend, Cabbagetown will kick off the new month with some great events. As discussed in last week’s post (click here if you didn’t get the chance to review it!), Riverside’s Street Fest “Eats and Beats” will be held June 1st, from 1-6pm, promising an energetic afternoon of food sampling, live entertainment, and family activities. At the same time, the Riverdale Art Walk will carry through the weekend, allowing participants to observe fine art from emerging and established artists in a variety of environments across the neighbourhood.  Lastly, the Cabbagetown Preservation Association’s Garden Tour, titled “Hidden Gardens and Private Spaces“, will take place Sunday, June 2nd.

Now that we’ve recapped some of the upcoming Cabbagetown events for the first weekend of June, let’s take a look at what’s going on in the neighbourhood:

The Children’s Book Bank

On Saturday, June 1st, from 11am to 3pm, the Children’s Book Bank will celebrate its fifth anniversary. This is an incredible achievement for such an admirable cause: this organization has been providing children of low-income situations with free books and literary support since 2008. As a community, let’s take the time to come-out and show our support.

Community Consultations

Concerning the Cabbagetown South Heritage Conservation District, a community consultation will be held at the Central Neighbourhood House (349 Ontario) on Wednesday, June 5th from 5 to 7pm. At the meeting, homeowners will have the opportunity to learn about and comment on the new district’s designation and the effect it will have on  properties in the neighbourhood. The new district spans over 700 properties between Carlton south, Shuter north, parliament west, and Sherborne east. Since many of these properties are prime examples of Victorian architecture, it is important for homeowners to understand all of the details about what can and cannot be done in regards to certain aspects of the home.
