Seaton House Redevelopment

The Seaton House redevelopment plans, proposed by Councillor Wong-Tam, were adopted by the City Council late last week with the following amendments:

  • (a) to ensure that the change to emergency shelter beds at the George Street site is managed in conjunction with the direction provided by Council in April 2013 to aim for a shelter occupancy rate no higher than 90% in the short term and a shelter occupancy rate policy that ensures that all homeless persons seeking a bed can be accommodated; and
  • (b) to establish an advisory group for the redevelopment of Seaton House that includes current and past residents of Seaton House, representatives from CUPE Local 79 including those working at Seaton House, service partners including other orders of government as appropriate, representatives from local residents’ groups and other stakeholders.

Safety Walk Results

The Cabbagetown Residents Association along with Toronto Division 51 led two lane walks during the last weekend of June. The following observations were made by residents and police officers alike:

  • Unkempt outdoor spaces attract unwanted public behaviour such as littering, loitering, and other inappropriate or destructive activities
  • Parking areas and small spaces between garages are easily accessible for hiding
  • Property crimes occur when the home/area is easily entered, i.e. unlocked, low-fence, open garage, etc.
  • Leaving graffiti encourages further vandalism in said area

It is important to take care of one’s property by tending the grass/gardens, eliminating hiding spots, and securing every means of ingress. For many more suggestions and tips, please read the full report here.

St. James Town’s Youth Council and Community Matters Tennis Court Development

Last Thursday, voting commenced for the Kraft Celebration Tour 2013, in which nominated community projects were given the chance to win $25,000. Sadly, after 3,033,801 votes were tallied, St. James Town was not among this year’s winners; however, this does not mean the end of the project and continued support would be greatly appreciated. Although the votes were not in our favour this year, we should congratulate the deserving winners: Fort Smith Centennial Arena, Morell Community Park, Kinsmen Field, Rotary Club of Invermere Splash Park, Fredericton Loyalist Rugby and Cricket Club, Town of Raymond, Terrain multi-sport de St-Etienne-de-Beauharnois, Rocanville Aquatic Centre, Township of Wilmot Splash Pad, and Fort Frances Curling Club.

Corktown Commons Defends

During the flood last week, Waterfront Toronto’s newest development project stood its ground and protected the West Don Lands neighbourhood, as well as the financial district, from the devastating amounts of watershed seen in the city. It seems as if Corktown Commons opened just in time over the July long weekend, because without it, many of us may have been in over our heads.
