Riverdale Farmer’s Market

Just a quick note to let you know that the Riverdale Farmer’s Market is still open and will remain open every Tuesday till October 25, 2011.  It’s a great space to get your week’s worth of fresh from the farm groceries done.  Here’s a list of vendors that you can expect to see at the market:


Akiwenzie’s Fish & More, Wiarton ON

Akiwenzie’s Fish & More is a small First Nations family business. They offer fresh and smoked Georgian Bay fish. The species are usually whitefish and lake trout. Their fresh fish is the previous days catch. The smoked fish is smoked with maple chips and takes approximately 5-7 hours in the smoker. They catch their own fish just north of Wiarton, ON which is on the Bruce Peninsula. Their home reserve is called Chippewas of Nawash. It has a beautiful location right on the shores of Georgian Bay.

John and Irina Alecu keep 150 beehives in 5 different yards close to conservation areas . They sell honey (clover, wildflower, buckwheat), honey comb, bee pollen, propolis (raw and tincture), fresh frozen royal jelly, beeswax candles and also live bees.

Bruno and Paula are mushroom growers. They have many varieties of fresh mushrooms including shiitake and oyster, mushroom pesto, crackers and Kombucha beverage.

Wendy Elrick and Ron Goettling (husband) have operated Green Gate Farms since 1994. Ron has farmed all his life, specializing in beef cattle and field crops. Wendy graduated from University of Guelph with a BSc Agriculture and MSc. She worked on campus for several years managing a diploma level distance agriculture program before becoming fully involved in their farming operation. In 1994 they purchased their own farm near New Hamburg. They raise beef and red veal naturally without growth hormones or preventative antibiotics. Currently they also use the home farm in Kitchener which has been in Ron’s family since 1916.
Ron and Wendy bring all cuts of beef to the market weekly as well as naturally smoked summer sausage and pepperettes and heat and serve items (meat pies, meat loaf, etc.). Their red veal (which is raised the same as their beef but marketed at a younger age) is also available but on a less regular basis. Their beef and red veal are taken to a nearby family operated abbatoir/ butcher shop. The facility and all meat are government inspected. Wendy works with the butchers every week when their meat is being processed.

The Vartanian family has been making many great tasting naturally preserved toorshi for over 50 years. (Toorshi is the Armenian word for pickles).
