Abandoned Bicycles in Toronto

As a part of the city-wide spring clean-up, the City of Toronto will be taking abandoned bicycles off of the streets to keep bike parking available and the roads uncluttered. If you think that you have found a bicycle that looks abandoned — cracked frame, flat tires, missing parts, or has been chained to the same place for over a month — call 311 and provide the city with as many details as possible.  Those that are reported will be removed immediately unless the state of the bike is undetermined. In such cases, the city will place a notification on the bicycle and will return a week later to check if it has been claimed. The program to remove abandoned bicycles is operating alongside acts to prevent vandalism, graffiti, and litter in the city. Residents are encouraged to keep a keen eye for disturbances in their neighbourhood so that proper corrections can be made.

Bixi Bike Rentals in Cabbagetown

For residents of the Cabbagetown community that do not own bicycles, or who wish for an alternative means to eliminate the presence of abandoned bicycles, sign up for the Bixi Bike petition, requesting a station in Cabbagetown. Currently, stations are located on the outskirts of the neighbourhood, but nothing directly inside. This is a great opportunity to introduce a greener means of transportation throughout the city of Toronto.  If residents can be encouraged to walk, bike, or take public-transit, the streets will be less congested and there will be less pollution.

Why Bicycling is a Proper Alternative

Using a bike as a method of transportation is cost effective, environmentally friendly, and convenient. Bicycles are portable, versatile, and easily maneuverable. In addition, bicycles bring you from point A directly to point B without transit lag or system restrictions. The abundance of abandon bicycles in Toronto poses the question whether or not people are aware of all of these benefits to cycling. Let’s take a look at a few health advantages to choosing to bike above all else:

  • Good for the heart – improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Tones and builds muscles – keeps the body functional and strong. It may also be a weight loss solution.
  • Improves mental health – a great stress reliever. Fitness is known to improve mood and cognitive function.
  • Boasts the immune system – bicycling can help maintain a healthy lifestyle, which ultimately increases your immune system’s function.

Before choosing to cycle, be sure to check out the city rules and regulations for bicycling. Also stay attentive and wear a helmet.
