Social Media for Local Businesses

I attended the Cabbagetown BIA’s Website Strategy FREE training event yesterday and came out thinking about some of the stats that I’ve been noticing on our website.

The theme of the meeting was all about websites and how content is king and search engines are queens that we have to bow to. Social media helps us get our message to people that love and like us while willing to putting up some of our worthless updates including food pictures.

I recently read a review in Canadian Business Magazine that talked about LinkedIN that has seen great amount of increase in sign ups and traffic versus the past king; Facebook. I have seen a great increase in the number of traffic to our content that has come from linkedIN versus Facebook. Traditionally, Facebook has outranked LinkedIN 2 to 1 for traffic generated but recent shift is showing numbers where LinkedIN is bringing more traffic to our website. I will be paying more attention to LinkedIN to make sure I keep all our audience engaged.

One point worth noting is that my message is mostly related to investment real estate which is part of our sister website at Torontonian Online and our target audience are professionals between 35 to 64 years old looking to generate passive income through real estate.

How do I know so much about the audience? Two softwares you should know about…

Hootsuite – The is a great service that costs you $6 per month and helps you spread your message across multiple social networks including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN, Google Plus and WordPress. The service also offers you additional insights about where your traffic clicks are coming from.

Google Analytics – If you have a website, you need analytics! You need to know how many unique visitors are coming to your site and what the major source of visitors are. Are you running a marketing campaign? How do you measure results if it was successful or not? Google Analytics should help answer most of your questions!

What are some of the networks you’re dealing with? How do you measure your success? Do you agree with this post?
